Air salon owned by Hazel s friend What transpires here I thought was possibly the black women coming together to talk about what their work and lives were like specially the two in the publishing house of Wagner books But instead we are later told that something sinister was happening hereWhen the reveal took place it was something I can t This Forsaken Earth even identifyxactly It was part conspiracy theory and part what the heck is going on and this is just crazy I see that there are already 4 and 5 "Reviews Out For This Book "out for this book isn t due for publication until June 1 2021 Perhaps there is another audience for this publication until June 1 2021 Perhaps there is another audience for this so if you want to read it I d say go in blind because the description is not accurateI m giving it 3 for what could have been a great premise but it wasn t developed in an interesting or The Summer Palace: A Captive Prince Short Story (Captive Prince Short Stories Book 2) engaging manner I know that this is a debut novel but it s listed as fictionsuspensethriller and I will only say that it fit in the fiction genre but this was in no way a thriller nor did I feel it was suspensefulThose of you who follow my reviews know that I am always honest in my reviews and I cannot recommend this book I m really sorry that this didn t work for me as I had real interest in knowing about what goes on in that world of books from which we only know the finished product the BOOKS themselves I received an ARC of this novel from the publisher through Edelweiss Mind blown Whatever I wasxpecting I wasn t The Garden of Happy Endings expecting that The Other Black Girl starts off as your usual office drama which I was definitely h debut thriller described as a cross between Get Out meets The Devil Wears Prada Oooh I m listening For some reason I went into this novel fixated on the Devil Wears Prada comparison and as suchxpected an Campfire easy to read comedy drama with some added social justicelements and arguments I was really really far off the mark What The Other Black Girl actually is very hard to pin down At first the office drama My Little Blue Dress elements are at the forefront of the novel as our protagonist Nella struggles with being the only Black girl in an office of white people who continuously talk down to her Then Hazel arrives the Other Black Girl who seems toffortlessly seduce the office with her Hurrah For The Blackshirts!: Fascists and Fascism in Britain Between the Wars easy going down toarth charm While Nella is at first thrilled to not be the only Black girl in the room it s not long before she becomes jealous of Hazel and not long after that before she begins to wonder if something isn t a littleoff The office drama goes completely off the rails at this point and the comparisons to Get Out become abundantly clear The story becomes darker sinister and much confusing I struggled with some of this novel The pacing was very slow for me Adam Smith: An Enlightened Life especially in the first half of the book Despite the thrillerlements coming out in full force around the halfway mark I only really felt the thrill of the work around 80% into the book This was Crazy Love exacerbated by the fact that the story is narrated by a few different characters and while I tend tonjoy multiple POVs in my books in this case I felt that the voices of the characters were all Annual Editions: Technologies, Social Media, and Society extremely similar Each narrator has a tendency to go off on tangentsxplaining some minor details from the past or describing an old memory which for me pulled me out of the drama of what was happening NOW It slowed the pace further and caused a lot of characters to come across as too similar to stand out on their own However ven if the plot got a bit bonkers I really njoyed the themes and topics it xamined Without giving too much away the focus on how those in the Black community might feel forced into code switching to better fit in with and succeed within white nvironments was a brilliant premise and was often really insightful for me a white reader On the whole I loved the premise in the Black Heart, Red Ruby end but felt that the characters didn t stand outnough to carry the story I felt that some of the characters were simply not necessary to the plot and I wanted focus on the mystery and drama of the work clues and sly winks that could keep me hooked. A starts to spiral and obsess over the sinister forces at play she soon realizes that there’s a lot at stake than just her careerA whip smart and dynamic thriller and sly social commentary that is perfect for anyone who has ver felt manipulated threatened or overlooked in the workplace The Other Black Girl will keep you on the dge of your seat until the very last twis. ,

Ave a huge buzz around it in 2021 I really didn t New Plant Parent: Learn the Ways of Plant Parenthood expect it tond the way it did I would recommend it for the journey Interesting debut from this author35 5Thank you to Netgalley and Bloomsbury UK for an ARC in xchange for a honest review When she said The Devil wears Prada meets Get Out The author wasn t messing aroundThe suspense definitely got to me I did that thing where you skip ahead and read a future chapter because you cannot stand not knowing any longer You cannot watch a character you love run headfirst into something that you know Is Going To End Up going to nd up for them It was a horrible God's Pocket experience and by that I mean the author did anxcellent job I was hooked from the startIt was an intense book It was a thrilling book It was a very ЯED entertaining book and at the same time it managed to open up a discussion about racism in the work place andspecially in publishing I think this book hit me hard because I could xactly see all of this play out in my head because I ve worked in a publishing house before because we all know these kinds of people and relationshipsThe characters are interesting and well written and the story and concept are very intriguing I wasn t bored for a second mostly I was scared and on top of that I could feel rage boiling my insides because how dare these characters do thatI m going to talk about the nding for a bit and it will include spoilers although I ll try not to give away any major plot points or twistsWhen I finished the book I was somewhat disappointed that it The Lost Art of Reading Natures Signs ended the way it did I felt very hopeless but then I realised that in a world where people are constantly discriminated against and marginalised by a privileged group there s simply no hope left once your own people turn on you So I can t be mad at the author s decision tond the book the way she did I still didn t feel satisfied though and I think it was because some things were brushed over and not resolved properly There s a big build up and the it sizzles out I needed backstory confrontation information I have a few unanswered uestions and I feel they needed addressing because the

Well that wasn t at all what I xpected from the blurb but the difference is good Turns out this is one of the most original storylines of recent years that is both timely and absolutely of the moment as Harris tackles the uestion of race in the overwhelmingly white world of Manhattan book publishing There s an authenticity to the work scenes and the kind of detail that proves Harris knows what she s talking about but there s also a bold and somewhat bonkers surreal turn to the plot that is both weird and yet tackles issues of compromise and selling out In A Figurative Or Symbolic Way I a figurative or symbolic "Way I See Why There "I see why there comparisons made with The Devil Wears Prada but I was also thinking of The Stepford WivesThere are a few places where the writing gets florid and the surreal strand is a little too nigmatic and opaue for too long these are probably rookie mistakes but my this is bold sharp and unashamedly in your face Definitely a book you ll want to talk about with all your friends and one to watch for summer 2021 Many thanks to Bloomsbury for an ARC via NetGalley Somewhere between 3 35One of the buzziest debuts of 2021 The Other Black Girl is something of a literary world mash up between Get Out and The Devil Wears PradaNella is a 26 year old publishing assistant at Wagner a publisher in New York and the only black woman working at the company Underrepresented in the industry she is Hark! The Herald Angels Scream excited when another black woman Hazel joins the company They initially bond over discussing hair care tips but all is not uite as it seems and after a series of unsettlingvents Nella begins to find herself feeling like her career is at riskI m on the fence on this novel On one hand the workplace sections are Colloquial Polish: The Complete Course for Beginners excellent observational pieces and Harris did a fantastic job onvoking how Nella felt being the only black woman in the publishers It becomes clear relatively arly on that something is up at Wagner but it was a loooong slow burn to find out what was going on with some random chapters following other women who were mbroiled in what was taking place These chapters didn t work for me not Bidadari yang Mengembara enough had been revealed for them to make much sense and the twist felt completely farcical So much time had been spent building a very convincing setting and cast of characters and I m afraid to say that I found my interest waning towards thend of the novel once things were revealed and I felt a bit like I d been cheated by the direction in which the author chose to take the novel can t say without big spoilersSo all in all a mixed bag A solid debut and one I Red River Girl enjoyed for the most part with reservations Thank you Netgalley and Bloomsbury Publishing for the advance copy which was provided inxchange for an honest review Now this book I really had to sit down let this book settle in my brain before I reviewed it The premise is very interesting and I couldn t wait to read it Now that I have I m left feeling unsatisfied The La strada delle croci ending and plot twist didn t hit for me The book is very slow paced which was to create suspense but the action gets going for the last 25% of the book So it is a slow burner as we get to see Nella in the work place and her interactions Now the book is described as The Devil Meets Prada meets Get Out Perhaps TDMP at the beginning but very less Get Out I didn t know this was a thriller until we got towards thend I was xpecting on about the lack of diversity in publishing and there was much than that but I couldn t figure it out At times I was left feeling a bit confused and frustratedThe author does do a great job of discussing the microaggressions Black women face in the office and xploring what it means to The Ballad of Dorothy Wordsworth express your blackness at work Injoyed Nella and Malaika s friendship There were also other POVs in the novel but I feel like they could ve added suspense to the storyline The subplot wasn T As Interesting As as interesting as Nella go mad and I was going crazy with her However I did njoy the book at the nd it just took a long time to get there I know that this book will Get Out meets The Devil Wears Prada in this Pretty Reckless (All Saints High, electric debut about the tension that unfurls when two young Black women meet against the starkly white backdrop of New York City book publishingTwenty six year oldditorial assistant Nella Rogers is tired of being the only Black mployee at Wagner Books Fed up with the isolation and microaggressions she’s thrilled when Harle.
